William Frank Holroyd of Court House Road, Princeton, West Virginia, is running for Magistrate of Mercer County in the 2016 election.
“I want to be part of the solution…”
Holroyd is a graduate of Marshall University with a degree in Political Science and “an intense interest in justice, and the legal rights of individuals as well as the public.”
In a statement attached to his announcement, Holroyd stated that the Magistrate Court is the “Little Guy’s Court” where anyone can go and hopefully get justice. In fact, if you cannot afford an attorney or simply don’t want to hire one, the Magistrate Court might as well be your Supreme Court. If you cannot get justice there, then, for you, there is no justice anywhere.
In a minor criminal case the state is represented by the prosecuting attorney and the accused is often unrepresented. It is the job of the magistrate to see that both sides receive justice, that, if necessary, a reasonable bond be set, and that if violence is a factor, restrictions be placed on the bond.
In civil cases the magistrate has the duty to be fair and just to both sides. Common sense is often the best justice, following the law, of course. This should be the aim of every judicial officer, especially at the magistrate level.
If elected to this office, I promise that I will follow these principles.
